Michelin Guide to provide reviews and guides on hotels five years after acquiring Tablet Hotels.

The Michelin Guide, a French-based publication and a brain child of  tire company-Michelin that is famous for its restaurant rating, is venturing into rating hotel experiences around the world. Michelin, who owns the Michelin Guide, provides ratings for restaurants. The rating is often given to chefs and restaurants which meet its standards. The award that is conferred is popularly referred to as Michelin Star. This listing is one of the most coveted listings in the world.

The French tire maker held a special event in Paris on Thursday night to reveal a substantial change. Instead of receiving stars like their culinary equivalents, the best hotels will henceforth be recognised with a separate “key” emblem. There are five criteria for awarding the key to the hotel.  They are the contribution to the local experience, their excellence in interior design and architecture, individuality, quality and consistency of service, and the alignment of comfort and experience with price.

The Guide, which began in 1900 as a driving guide to new drivers, has expanded into providing practical guides for customers of the hospitality industry. According to the International director of the Michelin Guide Gwendal Poullennec who took over in 2018, this project aims to provide travellers with a reference they can trust. This Poullennac and team believe will help users reduce their decision-making time. Poullennac noted that:

Today, by contrast, they find themselves confronted by a mass of information. Our users spend on average 10 hours in front of screens to prepare a trip and consult more than 10 platforms — it’s an obstacle course,”

This is not Michelin’s venture into hotels. Five years ago, it acquired Tablet Hotels, a booking website for boutiques and luxury hotels. For a start, a list of 5300 hotels across 120 countries will be reviewed by the guide and the results will be published on her website. This review will be carried out by anonymous inspectors from the Guide. According to Michelin, the hotel selection will include a wide range of price points and architectural types. However, the guide does not specify if lodgings can obtain several key emblems. A restaurant can receive up to three stars in the restaurant rating system, with one indicating it’s “worth a stop,” two indicating it’s “worth a diversion,” and three indicating it’s “worth a special journey.”

The Guide which offers star emblems to restaurants will now grant key emblems to deserving hotels instead of star emblems. This award will begin in 2024 and will be published on its website. According to Bloomberg, the Michelin website currently offers a handpicked selection of hotels that can be booked via Tablet. These hotels, which frequently have connections to Michelin-starred restaurants, will now be available for booking straight through the guide’s website. As part of their relationship, Michelin will receive a commission on these bookings.
